My experience was that Civil Series 2004 and LDT2004 installed fine under my Windows 7 64bit Home edition with NO XP mode and works just great. But, if you try to install Civil 3d 2008 or LDT 2008 then under Windows 7 64 bit, then you get the 'This is a 32 bit Acad.
It cannot be installed on a 64-bit Windows.' What you have to do to install 2008 is go through the whole rigamarole of paying to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional (or Ultimate) to get Windows XP Mode, then download and intall Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC (And be prepared to experience problems with the downloads from Microsoft.) then install 2008 under a Windows XP Mode session. What a pain, and when all is said and done my LDT2008 runs excruciatingly slow.
Rant On: But then again making life difficult seems par for the course for Adesk. Unless that is you want to buy the lates version of your CAD platform and put it on perpetual subscription. Which then causes a whole host of issues if your clients refuse to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Please return to your previously scheduled troubleshooting.
I am running Autocad 2004 under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Initially it was crashing, but allowing saving of files.
I think the error had to do with permissions, so last night I ran it as Administrator and that seemed to make it stable. The software installed without any problems or errors. I think Win 7 Professional 64or Ultimate 64 may be needed for Autocad 2004. I have not installed any 32 bit virtualization (unless it's there from the original OS install?) System is a Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 mobo, AMD Phenom II x6 1100T processor, 16 gb DDR3 1333 memory, Gigabyte Radeon HD 6950 2gb video card. I will try to post again if the situation changes. Thanks for your reply.
Problem with password is solved. I just could use the password I also use as 'Administrator' for starting Windows 7 Prof on my PC. Sorry for the confusion.
But my problem with Autocad 2004 with Windows 7 + XPMode is still there. When I click to the right on the Autocad icon and choose for 'execution as' 2 possibilities are indicated. Second one is the Administrator, see before, which does not work also when the password is used. First one is the VirtualXP./XPMuser. A tick(do hope that this is the right word) warns me that it defends my PC and data against nonallowed activities of computerprograms.
It is not possible to take this tick away permanently. Could this be the evildoer? Could this be the reason why Autocad 2004 does not work, even with XPMode?
Is Autocad considered by XPMode as notallowed? If so, any idea to solve this? Or any other idea to help me solve this problem? Any help is welcome! Changes in OS are forcing me to constantly update my computers, been running Auto Cad 2000 successfully on both Win 98SE and XP pro, wish they quit with 98SE, could also run my DOS programs, XP killed this. With Windows 7, 8, and 10, dead meat, can't even install the program, get that sign that says buy a new version, even with that extra way back compatibility directly from Microsoft does not work for me. Could be just me, seem to be having computer problems all my grown life, constant updates and trash to clean up.

What I did try was to take a direct copy off of an XP box, also had to go to C: Program files common files to copy that AutoDesk file and put this on this new commuter. But have one more step to go, really a ton of Autodesk stuff in the registry, can only copy and insert this line by line.
Haven't gotten to this stage yet. But the program will start and run, but just can't find those *.dll files yet. But this won't be the end of my problems, really haven't look for drivers for my 7,500 buck HP plotter. It did work with my 386 box with a 1,500 buck coprocessor in it, could never part with that box, only got little over a years use out of it for 5,000 bucks, that is like 10,000 bucks today. Or maybe for the first 25 years of my career, will go back to my old drafting table. Not really seeing change for the sake of improvement over the last 30 odd years, just change for the change to force us to update every couple of years.
Already 78 years old, should try fishing instead. After trying a whole bunch of garbage on the internet or spending another 80 or so bucks, all I had to do was to download 'WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe' from the Microsoft site and run it. It puts an XP window on top of you 64 bit window, I inserted my AutoCad 2000 CD and it installed perfectly, had to enter my serial number, log in. And authorization codes. Help did not work, so downloaded 'Help Windows6.1-KB917607-x64.msu', now this is working. From the explorer section on the XP simulator could access all my *.dwg files store in that 64 bit section. What I haven't tried yet, was adding all of my programs in XP mode, but for now, a lot nicer than having two computers sitting on my desk.
Next try will to see if this works on Win 10. Could be mistaken, not finding Microsoft Windows XP Mode for windows 10 to download, but sure finding enough sites that claim to show how to install it.
But ran into the same huge waste of time trying to get AutoCad 2000 to work on Windows 7. Did get it to kind of work just by just copying the entire folder from my XP box, but the huge problem is in the registry, literally hundreds of entries in there.
I rarely use my Windows 10 box, was fast at first, but no way to block updates on this thing, super super slow on the internet. Sage 50 Premium Accounting 2014 Canada Download Music here. But this is not the only problem, trying to get rid of old computers, city wants 30 bucks just to recycle a CRT monitor and another 30 for the computer box. Best Buy use to take them, but quit as did every other store. Can easily go off topic with smart phones, no G, then 1,2,3,4 and 5 is coming out, 800 bucks down the drain for a perfectly working iphone, but incompatible with the latest upgrades.
Was talk years ago about the government taking over with Microsoft, but gather Gates has more power than the government. It seems to me, Autodesk, just needs a new setup.exe, have the source code, make a few changes, because Microsoft is also moving stuff around, same old crap but in different locations. And can use a 32 bit rather than a 16 bit compiler.
Acad 2000 was good enough for me, was using it to make 3D drawings for patent applications, saved them bundles of cash to pay to get it done. This was until my company moved to China. Now just using it to help my kids with home finishing and remodeling. While some guys start off with a board and a saw, have to draw it out, make a BOM, and optimized it to minimize wasted material.
Long time automotive engineer, with this new automotive stuff with zero circuit diagrams, can scan the board and make a circuit drawing of it to like save 1,300 bucks for a new PCM. Ha, had a nightmare last night where AutoCad would not load, after all these things I tried to get it to work on Windows 7 64 bit Pro. So fired it up first thing this morning. Loaded beautifully. Thank you for the tip, but already a licensed user of Acad 2000, and have using it for some odd 17 years now.
Virtual XP is not that bad, opens a window as Bill calls it, to me, more of a picture frame, or just a frame, any window I have, can see through it. Like any other window, er, frame, can shrink with that icon on the bottom, and multitask with what's on Windows 7 pro.
All of my drawings are on the Win 7 drives. Just pop open virtual again, Acad is still there and running. Actually added a couple of more programs that would not run on seven, and really the only difference is, is waiting about another 20 seconds for virtual to load. It did take me a couple of minutes how to figure out how to make a shortcut to open virtual that is now in my task bar. Ha, remember the days when new was better?
Here is what works: Install Windows 7. Either 32 or 64 bit version is OK. Keep in mind that AutoCAD 2004 is a 32 bit applicartion. Install AutoCAD 2004. Use the Microsoft upgrade process to move to Windows 10. When completed AutoCAD 2004 will run just the same as in Windows 7 with no extra messages or other annoying prompts. Why does the work?
I simply don't know, it just works. If someone out there, smarter than me could figure out why it works then maybe this would answer the big question which is how to replecate this in Windows 10 without having to go back to Wimdows 7.
In the mean time good luck and keep in mind that when this free upgrade program ends from Microsoft on 7/29/16 this option may no loger be available to you.
